Homework, Week 4 - 3+-panel Strips

I also turned in a printed version of Lost Girl 001 (her leaving Virginia to come to Alaska) so my total of turned in pieces was 5 (instead of 4) - there were almost 6, but the fish strip refused to cooperate.

here it is again, 'cus the moose makes me giggle!

the one that is penciled here got inked right before class; I will have to wait to scan in the finished one ;)

(Lost Girl, episode 002) --- pretty self-explanatory.

(LG - Random 002) (here, i took one of the 6-word "stories" in one of our handouts and had fun with it. There's a few of these in here like that.)

(LG - Random 003) -- ok, i did have one person ask me what I was trying to do here (another reason I did extra for the assignment, I'm not particularly fond of this one, either) - basically, she cooked... she set table... she called for dinner and before she could finish calling her family to the table it seems dinner has been eaten and the people scattered, leaving her with the mess.

Last one:

No Name 001. I couldn't make this into a Lost Girl episode, as it doesn't fit her story-line. I was inspired by another of those 6-word stories, this one by, I do believe, Earnest Hemingway. Simple... effective... devastating.

(Miss) Adventures of Lost Girl; Random 001, 002

Occasionally, I will deviate from the story line I am currently working on, and introduce a "Random Moment". Ok, it might happen a lot more.

Meanwhile, here are two such Random Moments. There should be at least one more... I'm working on another one, but I'm having difficulty with parts of it.

Again, forgive my mediocre drawing skills (notice i upgraded myself from crappy to mediocre??) LOL.

Ok... Random Moment # 001:

Please note, these are sketches, and may change... the X's in the background of some areas indicate where I intend on solid black to be put (aka spot black).

Can't say much about this one... if you look too close at the humor, it bursts like a soap bubble in a room full of crystal points. I also love to throw my "favorite" coffee shop - The Fix - in there... BTW - as far as I know, "The Fix" as a coffee place/kiosk is available - please feel free to use it (it rocks!), just let me know (and send a pic!!!) so I can grin.

look close at the newspaper.... i'll add actual "articles" - such as Local Cartoonist and Beaver Battle; Ends In Draw. - well, whatever will fit. ;)

Random Moment # 002:

What can I say about this one? LOL. The middle panel will have the black background with white lettering - all the "negative" things in life. The "bursts" will remain white and have black lettering - all the "positives" in life.... sort of Lost Girl's memoirs.

I also like the open panel thing, and it can really mark a contrast with the more formal straight edges, and I seem to be growing fond of poking items out of frame edges & borders.

Anyways, gonna spend this afternoon "inking" on the computer, but will likely ink these by hand for the actual assignment.

(edit: first one!)

(Miss) Adventures of Lost Girl (001) - INKED

Inking done on computer in photoshop with a wacom.

The (Miss) Adventures of Lost Girl, 001

We're working on 3-panel strips now... so you're gonna be tortured a bit more with my horrid hand-drawing skills ;)

anyways, ignore the crappy scan, i had to combine two different ones together to get it to fit, and lets just say it wasnt the best job in the world. just wait til i finish this bad boy up... its amazing the transformation. Anyways, this was scanned, blended, cropped, and saved for web (resized then, too)

Wish i knew how Jamie got his images in and cleaned up like he does. he even inks his first. something about turning the whole thing into vectors, too. *sighs* sometimes, i feel so damned lost.

and that brings me to....

The (Miss) Adventures of Lost Girl

The premise: A young lady leaves all she's ever known to move to not only a new place, but one that broke ALL the molds... Alaska. The strip is to be a series depicting the hilarity of a new(hahahahaha!!!) Chichako (new-comer) trying to fit in and learn the ways, hoping one day to finally be called a Sourdough.

yeah, based rather loosely on me. hey, he DID say some of the best ones draw heavily from personal experience.

here is a sketch of what is to be the very first (Miss) Adventure of Lost Girl.

The Coffee Cult

Well, in class yesterday, while everyone else was working on heir homework, I was - as is typical of me - doodling. thankfully, this is one class where that is actually encouraged - even if, in this case, I had already finished the work being done.

Anyways.... I was staring at my container of coffee, and was thinking of my favorite phrase - nectar of the morning gods (and afternoon, evening, night...)... and then about how ideas cannot be copyrighted.... and back to coffee....

and THIS happened... I actually have another variation sketched in sketchbook, this is what happened when i took it from sketchbook to bristol board LOL.

Anyways... enjoy the Coffee Cult =D

Carbonated Daisy

The economy went downhill...

Cartoonist & Pencil, Original

My Original idea for the cartoonist single panel... finally inked.

Modern Life Support

People always seem plugged in now....

Caricatures

My FIRST attempt at a self-caricature... horrid, I know...

My second attempt, and I finally gave up for now LOL.

(never mind the elf ears, right? LOL)

My favorite of the ones my classmates did of me...
Thanks, Nick!!! You're one hell of an artist!

George Bush - The Pursuit of Happiness

Well, last night, as is typical of late night TV - NOTHING was on. So, I left it on TMZ for background noise... until I heard that good ol' George had gotten himself into a pickle at a party - and I perked up. Ok, so he didn't exactly; his wife was there and even she got some eyecandy. I DID have to poke fun, however. ;) here's the link to the story & original image:

Bear Baiting

Well, i deviated slightly... the fence is from tablesaw, not cornucopia...

and i chose not to put the speech bubbles.

Editorial Idea: Bear Baiting

Had an idea for an editorial on Bear Baiting, because of this article:

Bear Baiting

gonna work on the sketch now, and hopefully, will be able to scan in the rough shortly...

ok... have discovered i can fake a moose, but not a bear - they keep turning out looking like much-loved teddy bears - and thats not where i want the piece to go.

SO.... im trying something new. i posed some moose & a bear (moose - content paradise and the bear came with poser) in Poser, and am importing them into Vue.

I set up a terrain and worked with it until i was happy, then rendered it out and saved the image.

I then imported my moose and the bear, put them where I wanted, and added a fence from Cornucopia3D to the image. I turned off visibility on the landscape and the ground plane overall, and each individual element as needed and rendered them out, saving each one along with their alpha mask, which Vue creates automatically.

import into photoshop and composite everything, then using the wacom and the pencil tool in photoshop, "ink" it in... and treat it as i would any piece.

ok... so its my plan outlined. i may deviate ;) =D

anyways... back to doing this =D

Character Creation Scans - Daisy & Sunny

Final Hand-drawn Characters for week 1's class assignment.

Cropped in some cases and saved for web - otherwise, no changes (you can see where my papers overlapped my scanner edges - oopsies LOL)

Been kickin around ideas for using these in a comic strip of some kind, even a short one. Nemesis: Gardener, bugs, occasional animals. Maybe a title: The Gardener's Plot.. ??

Daisy & Sunny: Front View:

Sunny & Daisy: Side View:

Sunny & Daisy: Back View:

Different Style:

What can I say... simplified even more, they definately became "different".

Expressions:

Because Sunny and Daisy are so similar in style, even though the over-all shape of their hair & leaf-hands/feet are different - I chose to switch between them for this part of the assignment.

Character Environment & Props:

With this one, I chose to depict when Sunny meets Daisy and rescues her from the Gardener's evil work. He later adopts her.

Single Panel gags - Post-Ink

(editted: June 5, 2009) - On closer examination and further reflection, I bleieve I should have had the spruce tree in the above image leaning the OTHER direction, so the curve would draw your eyes from the text at top to the text at bottom... otherwise, still one of my favs LOL.

Week 2: Single Panel Gags; Roughs ~ Scanned

will rescan after inking is finished.

Character Environment

Nyxi

Meet Nyxi... a single mother who is also a college student & part-time housekeeper by day... with extraordinary abilities....

Nyx - Lady Raven of the Night

Meet Nyx, Lady Raven of the Night.... Descended from the Haida, she transforms herself from Girl (Nyxi) to Lady Raven and back again.... but can only do so at night.

Figure is V4 from Daz, Hair is Anime Hair by B25, Skin is by Moonbunnie as well as dialed character combination. Darkworld Dreamer wings from Daz, Kay Leathers available @ Daz, as is Kyrrdis outfit (think thats the one).

Pensri - Character Development

Pensri-kitty is a character that I've been developing for almost 5 years now. She's undergone a lot of changes, and will likely go through more as I keep refining her.

Skin was adapted by me from RawArt's WyldCatz! for V4, and can be found at Daz3D.com; V4 is from Daz3D (Victoria 4), morphs as well.

Fairylicious Outfit (leaves) are by Thorneworks and Mada, and available at Daz3D.com

Hair is Mitsu Hair from Daz3D

Character was "dialed" by me.

Due to her unusual markings, expressions are difficult to portray clearly. Expressions other than this side of neutral are difficult anyway, as the morphs/dials don't always work the way you'd like....

Cartooning and Comic Art

This blog was started as a result of a class I'm currently taking under Jamie Smith's instruction at UAF. You may know Jamie's work - Nuggets, Freeze Frame, and other stuff, too!

Ink & Snow

Anyways... the class is really cool =D I'm struggling with my hand-drawn art, so in an attempt to actually prove I'm learning something (its soooo difficult to get past badly drawn stuff - specially my own!)... i'm repeating all the assignments using my computer and the programs I know and love so much.

Hopefully, this blog will continue, for I have discovered a love of creating punny stuff ;)

strangely enough....

;)
